What is plantar fasciitis?
The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the arch. Repeated strain can irritate it where it attaches to the heel bone.
Risk factors include tight calf muscles, flat feet or high arches, long periods of standing, a sudden increase in activity, unsupportive shoes, and weight gain.
Most patients improve with a consistent conservative plan. A small number with long-lasting symptoms may be considered for advanced or surgical options.
- Stabbing pain with first steps in the morning
- Pain at the bottom of the heel or arch
- Pain that improves with movement but returns after rest
A focused exam, gait review, and imaging when indicated help confirm plantar fasciitis and rule out other causes.
- Targeted stretching program
- Supportive footwear and arch support
- Custom orthotics
- Night splints
- In-office injections when appropriate
- Advanced therapies and surgical care for chronic cases
- Heel or arch pain lasting more than a week
- Pain that interferes with work or exercise

Frequently asked questions
What home care helps plantar fasciitis?
Calf and arch stretching, supportive shoes, avoiding barefoot walking on hard floors, and icing after activity are common first steps. Ask us for a stretching handout.
Do orthotics help?
Arch support, either over-the-counter or custom, can reduce strain on the plantar fascia for many patients.
Are injections safe?
Injections can relieve inflammation for some patients. Their use is limited and individualized because of possible risks.
Will I need surgery?
Surgery is uncommon and is generally only considered after many months of consistent conservative care without improvement.
