Amputation Prevention

Diabetic Amputation Prevention & Limb Salvage — Hernando & Southaven, MS

Most diabetic foot amputations are preventable. We provide structured limb salvage care: wound healing, vascular coordination, infection control, and protective surgery.

Roughly 85% of diabetic lower-extremity amputations are preceded by a foot ulcer. Aggressive, structured wound care prevents the majority of these amputations.

Our limb salvage approach combines weekly wound care, vascular evaluation when needed, infection control, offloading with custom shoes or casts, and protective surgery to correct the underlying pressure point or partial foot amputation when needed to save the rest of the limb.

Treatment we provide
  • Weekly wound care & debridement
  • Vascular evaluation & revascularization referral
  • Infection control with culture-directed antibiotics
  • Total contact casting & offloading

  • Toe or partial foot amputation to save the limb
  • Tendon balancing and pressure-point surgery

Frequently asked questions

I was told I need an amputation. Should I get a second opinion?

Yes. Many amputations recommended at hospitals or other practices can be avoided or reduced in scope with focused limb salvage care. Call 662-449-3663 for an urgent second opinion before consenting to amputation.

What's the chance of saving my foot?

It depends on circulation, infection, and how much tissue is involved. Most diabetic feet can be saved with timely care — even feet that have already had toe or partial foot amputations.

Will I be able to walk after partial foot amputation?

Most patients walk normally after a single-toe or ray amputation with appropriate footwear. Larger amputations may require custom shoes, fillers, or bracing.
