What is Lapiplasty?
A bunion is often more than a bump. In many patients, the long bone behind the big toe (the first metatarsal) has shifted and rotated because the joint near the middle of the foot is unstable.
Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction is a surgical technique that repositions that bone in three planes — side to side, up and down, and rotation — and then stabilizes the unstable joint with small titanium plates. It is a type of fusion procedure, sometimes called a modified Lapidus.
Not every bunion needs surgery, and not every bunion surgery should be Lapiplasty. Many patients do well with shoe changes, padding, and orthotics. Surgery is generally considered when pain continues to limit daily activity despite conservative care.
Recovery overview
Recovery varies from person to person and depends on your health, bone quality, and how closely the post-operative plan is followed.
Many patients are placed in a protective boot and begin limited, protected weight-bearing in the first weeks as directed by the surgeon. Swelling commonly lasts several months.
Return to regular shoes and normal activity is gradual and is guided by follow-up visits and X-rays. Dr. Lyons reviews a realistic timeline with you before surgery.

Frequently asked questions
Who may be a candidate for Lapiplasty?
Adults with a painful bunion that has not improved with conservative care, especially when imaging shows rotation of the first metatarsal or instability at the base of the big toe. A weight-bearing exam and X-rays are needed to decide.
Is Lapiplasty the same as removing the bump?
No. Simply shaving the bump does not reposition the bone. Lapiplasty realigns the metatarsal and stabilizes the joint it sits on.
Will my bunion come back?
No surgery can guarantee a bunion will not return. Addressing rotation and joint instability is intended to lower that risk, and your surgeon can discuss your individual situation.
What are the risks?
As with any foot surgery, risks include infection, delayed healing, nerve irritation, stiffness, hardware irritation, and the joint not fusing as expected. These are reviewed in detail during a consultation.
