Understanding bunions

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a gradual change in the alignment of the big toe joint. The big toe drifts toward the second toe and a prominence forms on the inside of the foot.

Genetics, foot structure, and footwear can all play a role. Bunions often progress slowly, and symptoms do not always match how large the bunion looks.

Care usually starts conservatively. Surgery is considered when pain persists and limits activity despite shoe changes, padding, and orthotics.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bunion go away without surgery?

Conservative care cannot reverse the bone alignment, but it can often reduce pain and slow symptoms for many patients.

What shoes help with bunions?

Shoes with a wide, deep toe box, soft uppers, and a low heel usually reduce pressure on the joint.

When is surgery considered?

When pain continues to limit walking, work, or footwear after a reasonable trial of conservative care. Options include osteotomy procedures and Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction.

Do you treat bunions in children and teens?

Yes. Adolescent bunions are evaluated carefully, and treatment is usually conservative while the foot is still growing.
