Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis is inflammation and degeneration of the Achilles tendon — the strong band that runs from the calf to the heel. We evaluate and treat patients with acute and chronic Achilles pain across Hernando, Southaven, and patients across DeSoto County and the greater Memphis area.

  • Thickening of the tendon
Common causes
  • Sudden increase in running or walking activity
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Poor footwear or worn-out shoes
  • Age-related tendon degeneration (tendinosis)

When surgery is considered

Surgery is considered when 6+ months of conservative care fails, when there is significant tendon degeneration on imaging, or when a partial tear is present.

Recovery

Most patients improve within 6–12 weeks of conservative care. Surgical recovery typically requires 4–6 weeks of immobilization followed by physical therapy, with return to full activity around 4–6 months.

Frequently asked questions

Will my Achilles tendonitis heal on its own?

Mild cases often improve with rest, stretching, and proper shoes. Chronic cases (over 3 months) usually need formal treatment to prevent rupture.

Is it dangerous to keep running with Achilles pain?

Running through Achilles pain risks progression to a partial or complete rupture. Get evaluated before pushing through it.
