Alpha-Lipoic Acid & Benfotiamine for Neuropathy

A board-certified guide to nerve-support supplements that may reduce burning, tingling, and numbness in the feet.

What are ALA and Benfotiamine?

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect nerves from oxidative stress and may improve blood flow to nerve tissues. Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1 (thiamine) that is better absorbed than standard thiamine and supports healthy nerve signaling. Together, these supplements are commonly used by patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy to reduce symptoms like burning, tingling, numbness, and sharp foot pain.

Key benefits

Reduce nerve pain & burning

ALA may decrease oxidative damage to nerves and reduce the burning sensation many neuropathy patients feel in their feet.

Support healthy nerve signaling

Benfotiamine helps maintain thiamine levels in nerve tissue, supporting proper nerve transmission.

Improve blood flow to nerves

ALA has vasodilatory properties that can increase microcirculation to peripheral nerves.

Complement diabetic foot care

Used alongside regular diabetic foot exams and good glucose control, these supplements support overall nerve health.

Typical dosing guidance

Many patients start with alpha-lipoic acid 600 mg daily and benfotiamine 300 mg twice daily. Dosing may be adjusted based on your specific symptoms, kidney function, and other medications. Our handout includes a full dosing guide, timing tips, and a symptom diary to track your progress.
